The so-called general strike orchestrated by CPM cadres and CITU in Kerala was nothing short of a brutal display of lawlessness and mob violence. Under the pretext of exercising democratic rights, these groups unleashed destruction across the state They vandalized public property, and blocked roads turning Kerala into a lawless zone reminiscent of a kangaroo court.
The complete breakdown of law and order was shocking, with the police standing by as mute spectators. Government employees who attempted to attend work were physically assaulted, and emergency services, including vehicles en route to hospitals, were obstructed with utter disregard for human life. The strike, which purported to represent workers’ rights, in reality became a tool of intimidation and anarchy.
The estimated loss of ₹1000 crore to the state's economy is not merely a financial setback but a blow to daily-wage earners, small vendors, and the most vulnerable sections of society. The image of fish vendors and laborers being attacked for trying to earn a livelihood reveals the real face of this so-called protest.
High Court directives were brazenly defied, and the failure of the police force and the Home Ministry to act raises serious concerns about governance and accountability in Kerala.
Those responsible for this widespread violence must be identified, prosecuted without delay, and forced to compensate for the damages. No democratic society can tolerate such reckless hooliganism masquerading as a strike.
