Eclipse in State Congress.

Poised by the prospect of next rule in the state, Congress leaders in Kerala now make excessive noise. Even low profile leaders of the Congress appear in channel interviews and create scenes to make an impression that that they are the persons who fix on the fate of the state for the next five years. Indubitably, it is true that at the time of eclipse even earthworm should show its might.

LDF- the house of ruin

The LDF in Kerala has become a house of ruin. It is to lose one more of its allies with Kerala Congress-J merging with Mani Congress, a constituent of the Congress-led Opposition UDF. The KC-J is the fourth ally of the LDF to leave the ruling front in the past four years. How could a party remain in a sinking boat? However, Joseph’s decision to leave the LDF is one of the unkindest betrayals in the political history of Kerala. The protest from the Congress leaders against the merger is in the right direction and no additional seat should be spared for the Mani-Joseph ally.

Joseph’s decision to leave the LDF is a breather for P C Thomas, yet another epitome of opportunism. It is reported that clergies were behind the merger move between the parties of Mani and Joseph. If Christian clergies are eager to keep Joseph in Mani’s fold why can’t they pay heed to the other ardent faithful P C Thomas? In fact high priests of the Catholic Church have more business in politics than leading the community in faith matters

Again, it is wonderful enough to see the statement of State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala that he was yet to receive any formal information on the merger move of Joseph and Mani. Does he mean a fax from Mani in this regard?

Mahatma Gandhi University in killing spree

Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala is in a killing spree to derecognise some of it’s off campus centres and affiliated institutions. Latest in this direction is the suspension the recognition of Sreenikethan Off Campus Centre at Karamkode, Kollam dist, following the reported seizure of answer scripts of students involved in mass copying. Controller of Examinations Thomas John Mambara, along with other bigwigs of the University is all in a mood to end the widespread malpractice in the examination centres. However, no woman member is seen in the squad. Does it mean that women candidates are less vulnerable to misconduct or woman bureaucrats in the University are not plucky enough to spot out the miscreants in the examination hall?

I personally believe the action of Mambara and his coterie is against the accepted policy of the Kerala Education ministry. The Education Minister M A Baby is all the time taking huge effort to lessen the hardships of examinations and thereby to avoid mental stress of students. A student who puts only number of the questions in the answer script he or she is awarded full marks in the plus 2 examination. On the other hand Mambara and company's act is just opposite to it.

The laxity in conducting the examination has been created by school/college authorities. The teacher- assisted copying in examination hall is the feature of many new generation CBSE schools. No external invigilators are posted and if posted one he enjoys the hospitality of the school management and closes his eyes at malpractice. Is hundred percent result and that too all with distinctions in SSLC examination in Gulf countries, an indication of the fact that the sons and daughters of people in Gulf are more intelligent than their counterparts in Kerala? The invigilators posted from Kerala to conduct examination there always sit in a/c rooms enjoying gulf hospitality while examination goes as desired by the school authority. If one has still doubts then ask the government to conduct a narco analysis on those who had done the job in Gulf schools. All schools are in a competition mood in Kerala and hence they resort unscrupulous acts to get hundred percent results and that is essential for their existence. The students passed out from these schools view examinations in the manner of their experience and hence resulted in mass copying. The fault is not with the students but with the teachers of the institution and the University authorities who had given permission to bland agencies to run off-campus centres.

The action of Mambara and company send a wrong notion to the outside world that the degree certificates of the pass outs from M G University are not genuine. What we need is a fool proof method to ensure the genuineness of the examination system and not a dire practice at the end to ‘kill’ the students. Because of utter ignominy if a candidate ends his life will Mambara compensate for it? The alternative is this: Inculcate the importance of examination in the very beginning of curriculum. Examination should be conducted with external examiners and their remuneration should be given in time. Mass humiliation in the examination hall should not be taken as mean for getting more money as TA and DA to the University authorities.

Tharoor’s mission next

Former Minister Shashi Tharoor says he has done no mistake to bring the IPL team to Kerala and his attempt to get an IPL team for Kerala has been succeeded. Dear former Minster, I want to know in what aspect the name Kerala is associated with IPL. How many players from Kerala are associated with Kerala IPL? Name the chief promoters of IPL from Kerala? Which is the base station for Kerala IPL? What is the chunk of revenue the state Government going to obtain by Kerala IPl team? Except you and your fiancĂ© Sunanda Pushkar, is there anyone from Kerala associated with Kochi IPL? The term ‘Kerala’ with a cricket team does not always connect it with Kerala. An orchestra team from Muhamma named as ‘Cochin Angels’ does not necessarily relate to Kochi.

So, dear former minister, don’t be pained by the allegations against you. The 30 years of your service in the United Nations was a matter of poise for us. But you spoiled it with your latest circling around a widow and the alleged ‘sweat equity’of rupees 70 crore to her. Anyhow your involvement in the nasty IPL would result in a probe and that would end nowhere because sharks involved are mightier than you.

Your admittance that you would continue to work for the development of the State and the city is acceptable, however your mission to ensure the victory of the UDF in the local bodies and Assembly elections is not at all essential because the present ruling LDF has already dug their grave. Your presence may reduce a few votes as women of Kerala do not like men running after several women.

Hartal God’s Own Country

Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has justified the call for a hartal in the state on April 27 to protest Centre’s “failure” to contain price rise of essential commodities. The hartal has been declared by the ruling Left Front. If it were a Bandh, obviously Achuthanandan must not have endorsed it because the court has banned the bandh as unconstitutional. Then, what is the difference between a hartal and a bandh? No one has a clear cut demarcation between the two. God only knows what is meaning of Bandh and its difference from hartal. For ordinary people “hartal” is the synonym of bandh but for the court there is a difference.
When the court banned the bandh as undemocratic and unconstitutional, the word has been transformed conveniently in to hartal by the political parties. The parties consider there is no existence for them if occasional hartals are not observed in the state. Many criticize hartals because of the damages done by it such as loss of man power, paralysis of industrial sectors , educational institutions, banking organizations etc. However, the hartal brings many advantagestoo!.

The present financial position of the State Government is very bleak, whatever may be the gesticulation of the Finance Minister. The major source of income for the government is from the sale of Indian made foreign liquor and sale of river sands from dam sites. And without this income the government could not survive. The revenue from liquor will be high on hartal day as most people enjoy hartal as a holiday and keep a bottle of his brand at home. He spends the day enjoying TV along with liquor and snacks. The channels make more money on hartal day by airing a block buster along with handful of advertisements. The transport corporation also earns a little by not keeping all schedules.

Prohibition of travel in vehicles saves money spent for fuel. Since people of Kerala are well experimented with the comics of hartal no body could punish them by observing hartal. It is for daily wage owners and ailing aged ones the hartal brings harm. All hartals are a kind of unkindness and ways to show the muscle power of political parties. Kerala has become a hartal god’s on state and even a two member party could paralyze the state by a hartal call.

I don’t think after the ‘highly successful hartal’ the price of essential commodities in the state would come down. The on going hartal is a crafty way of LDF government in the state to sell more liquor and make more revenue. Rule and ruin is the watchword of the present LDF government.

Kerala political pudding

Kerala political pudding

The Congress in Kerala is now with least doubt about the next five years rule in the State. This I say not because of the endorsement of Ramakrishna Pillai, Secretary of the State unit of RSP but of the factional war with in the Congress. All these times the State Congress was seen orbiting round the Chandy-Chennithala nucleus, the new incarnation of the erstwhile K M Chandy-Karunakaran duo, nevertheless, Chennithala has deserted Chandy. Seemingly Chennithala is the epicenter of the new group formulations.
Obviously a planned effort to sideline Oommen Chandy and to avoid him after the next Assembly elections is in the progress. However, Oommen Chandy is a man not to be underrated.

I think Vayalar Ravi is seen discontented with his portfolio in the Central cabinet as Minister of Overseas Affairs. In fact the Overseas Affairs Ministry is a lesser one in the Central Government and their advertisement in TV Channels is in actual fact horrible. And that is why Ravi tries to emerge as the tough candidate for the Chief Minister’s post in the State. If Chennithala supports Ravi for this it will turn out as one of the greatest betrayal in the political history of Kerala.

I wonder why all the three groups have come together to weaken the supremacy of Oommen Chandy who worked with all his effort in last four years. Was Chandy unaware of the washing off sand under his feet? No matter what may the political circus in the State the madam at Delhi decides the fate and for that Antony must open his mouth.
In Antony’s choice, whether it is Ravi or Chandy, there lies the proof of Kerala political pudding for the next five years.

IPL-rich man’s game.

The continuing controversy involving IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor has smeared the image of the rich man’s game- the cricket. Whitening black money and speculative business are the key issues of the IPL and hence it should be banned in India. Who will have to earn more money-Modi, Tharoor or else who is the prime subject behind the IPL controversy. The Left parties, Siva Sena , Janatha Dal and many others have favoured the ban of IPL. The black money-rich IPL has brought notoriety to the country and spoiled the work hours of many. It also ruined the study time of innumerable students preparing for their qualifying examinations. The corrupt ministers, officials, call girls etc are conglomerated in this grimy IPL of match fixing.

A thorough investigation into the wealth of ministers, actors, businessmen, spicy girls, and even widows who have pumped in and pumped out huge amount of money through IPL franchisees should be immediately made. IPL is an extravagance unsuited to the culture of Indian Nationality.

Tharoor in soup

I believe the Kashmiri beautician, no the beauty herself, turned him down. Tharoor is nobody now. With disaster and disgrace, the minister of state for external affairs lost his affair. Tell me my friend how many nights you have to weep. The minister who was a king from the south lost his crown and all that for woman, a widow. Stories of parallel errors are elsewhere in the history of the world.
Malayalam poet Kunchan Nambiar said once: ‘Wars are plenty in this world because of money and woman’.
I wonder why no Congress leaders from Kerala come out in support of Tharoor. In fact, the entire Kerala unit of the Congress, which congratulated Tharoor for bringing an Indian Premier League team to Kochi, has not come out openly to defend the struggling minister. This is mainly of two reasons. First is: Tharoor’s fiancĂ© with a beautiful widow after deserting his present wife and the cash behind sweat equity. Secondly, Kochi IPL is a trade name in which Kerala has no actual involvement. The promoters and the base station of Kochi IPL are from outside Kerala. The Congress men in Kerala understood these undercurrents only after the foul play of IPL commissar Lalit Modi.

Tharoor’s clarification that he had not misused his official position has little takers. His performance in the Parliament defending himself was gorgeous except his ‘carefully careless hair’ hanging over the right eye. The Kashmiri beauty might have forgotten to fasten his hair with a ‘slide pin’ before sending him to the Parliament.

However, I could not endorse Kerala State Finance Minister Thomas Isaac’s slamming of Tharoor, saying it would have been better if Tharoor had taken interest in getting allotment of more rice for the state than bringing an IPL team for Kerala. When Isaac has already taken ample steps with his budget to give rice at Rs 3 per kg to all BPL people in Kerala why should Tharoor take interest in lulling the fame of Isaac?

Need for permanent Moideen commission

The NP Moideen commission was originally constituted by the Kerala State unit of the National Congress to inquire into the sex scandal involving Rajmohan Unnithan. The commission has done its job well by collecting statements from people in Manjeri where Unnithan was caught red-handed and finally he was exonerated. Unnithan has stated that the woman with whom he was found was Jayalakshmi, a general secretary of the Congress Sewa Dal from Kollam, and that his wife had been aware of his journey to Manjeri with her. His version was seen acceptable to Moideen.

However, this sort of commission and enquiry has not been ordered in the case of Central Minister Shashi Tharoor who was seen wandering in the streets of Delhi (not Manjeri) with his new fiancée Sunanda Pushkar. They were seen in TV footage that Tharoor was explaining all the niceties of a photo gallery to Sunanda, seemingly she as a woman of no substance before Tharoor. Is Delhi Janamaithri police less vigilant than the police at Manjeri? Compared to Tharoor, Unnithan is better even if the allegations against him are true, because he has not divorced his first wife and mother of his son. The story of Tharoor is cruder as he has divorced one, in the verge of divorce of another and cornering around a third one. He is in the making of a new Krishna, of course not the senior minister in his department.

I wonder why the Youth Congress men of Kerala are holding up Tharoor when they do not see any chance of Unnithan returning to the party after revocation of suspension. I request the Congress Central leadership to extent the work of Moideen commission to Tharror case also and make the commission permanent one.

Passionate hobby of Dr Titus

Re letter “Husbands and wives” by Dr Titus (TNIE April 14).
I agree it is the passionate hobby of some to count the recurring ‘sambantham’(marriage) of ‘Delhi Nair turned Desi Nampoori’. Like wise it is the obsessive hobby of some ‘Chivas Regal writers’ to count this counting. The Delhi Nair Tharoor has ended in soup with his fiddly IPL game and repeated marriage. As well a drunken doctor may also end up in trouble when his prescription becomes detrimental.
I hope Dr Titus has no plan for an immediate divorce albeit no Indian law prevents it.

Ministers making money

Varied are the ways of ministers in India for making money. When the ministers from states collect a feeble sum from abkari contactors and land grabbers it is a matter of big hue and cry in the state. But when one focuses at ministers of the central cabinet the amount of bribe is in tune with several crores and it not even becomes a matter of debate. It is often an awful practice in Indian stock market to spread bad news about a company after selling the shares in possession by the minister or his kin. When the price is down the minister’s men would repurchase the entire shares at a low cost. Similar to this bogus news from minister’s office would create panic buyers of certain company shares and minister is able to book huge sum by way of speculation. Nevertheless when matter comes to ministers of international acclaim like Shashi Tharoor the way of booking profit is a special one.

Shashi Tharoor’s association with Kochi IPL team franchisee consortium Rendezvous Sports World and his war of words with IPL Supremo Lalit Modi tell that it is all not well with minister Tharoor. People feel the minister is not as straight as he claims to be.
The story of the relation between Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar, who is said to have 18 percent stake in the Kerala IPL franchisee, can be believed, in that case the hands of Tharoor are not clear. He could not easily wash out from the present mess.

Meanwhile, it is quite jousting to see that some cricket lovers from Kerala is in the rescue of Tharoor. They say that the Minister has the freedom to keep his personal secrets. He has already denied any kind of relationship with Sunanda Pushkaer. This is quite absurd because an Indian Minister should be clear in all facets whether it is his public life or private.

‘AMMA’ is in the verge of collapse.

It is not because thespian Thilakan hurls all abuses on it or partisan social critic Sukumar Azhikode passes judgment on it, it is all because the internal split in it takes ‘AMMA’ to the verge of collapse. The war of words in the Malayalam film industry over the decision of the Film Chamber of Commerce to ban actors and playback singers from appearing in television programmes is the latest indication in this direction. Of late, actor Jagadeesh attacking actorSuresh Gopi indicates that all is not well within the association and it would divide vertically into two in the immediate future. Wise are women artists in Malayalam film industry for they are not involving in the present tussle in the industry.
Interestingly, while lesser actors quarrel on silly stuff, superstars stay away acting and making money.

In this context what I want to point out to the actors and whistle bowlers of the film industry is that we, viewers are not bothered with your quarrels. Film industry is not a crucial factor in the breathing of common man in Kerala. If you make good film we see and if you make bad film we will throw into thrash. We people could live without seeing nasty scenes 60 plus super star cornering a teen cute girl. Why should we create in our mind a bad taste of enjoying old man’s love making with a young girl?

How much money is wasted in Kerala for masking wicked films! The government should withdraw all the subsidies and assistance to Malayalm film industry. . All awards including State awards, which are often bones of contention, should be withdrawn. The channel debates and media coverage have false notion that this 250 member organization ‘AMMA’ is deciding the fate all Malayalis. This is absolutely a wrong concept and they have no influence average Keralite.

‘Delhi nair’ prefers Krishna to Rama

‘Delhi nair’ prefers Krishna to Rama

Sir,
Tilottama, Christa and Sunanda- who are they? They are the women associated with our Minister of States for External Affairs, Mr. Shashi Tharoor. Tharoor when landed at Thiruvananthapuram as a ‘dhothi cladded Delhi nair’for contesting in the last election to the Parliament, people believed that he was a fine gentleman suited to Indian heritage as his face resembled a TV screen Sri Raman and women in plenty voted for him. Nevertheless when became a minister in the Central cabinet he started exhibiting his western culture. He hated the cattle class travel and preferred to stay in star hotel. This UN returned bureaucrat created much head-ache to Manmohan Singh and the Congress High Command was in a desperate bid to start a control room to contain the troubles created by this minister. This predicament has culminated with he now going to marry Sunanda, a Kashmiri girl, a trained beautician. Sunanda would be Shashi Tharoor’s third wife.

News sources say that the marriage is likely to take place after Tharoor and his current wife, Christa Giles, complete their divorce. Christa is Tharoor’s second wife. Prior to this he had married to academic Tilottama Mukherji, whom he knew from his school days in Kolkata.

Will Tharoor stop with this or prefer to enact a Krishna than Rama?

PSC to appoint University teachers.

I endorse KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala’s demand that the Public Service Commission (PSC) should be authorised to make university appointments. All University appointments at present are done on the basis of political affiliations and that should come to an end. The University Syndicates are conglomeration of politically privileged ones who siphon out huge sum from university fund why way of TA/DA. The PSC appointment should extended to aided colleges too in Kerala where the salaries to teaching staff and non-teaching staff are paid from state exchequer but the appointments are done erratically. The appointment committee constituted in colleges with a government nominee and a subject expert often shows their expertise in eating a lavish dinner after the interview. There is not even a single private college in Kerala where appointments are done without a price. And with the implementation of revised UGC package the donation will augment to half a crore.

Act of turning universities into its feeder organizations of political parties is not a new phenomenon. All political parties are responsible for turning the centres of academic excellence in to shambles.

Needed iron hand for combating terrorism

It is highly shocking to read Maoist rebels killing 74 members of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and two policemen from the Chhattisgarh police in Dantewada district. The incident indicates that not only the ordinary people but the police men in India also live in dangerous conditions.

It has now become an urgent necessity to combat terrorism in India and we need a time bound solution. There is sufficient vocal combat from ministers when attacks occur but none is seen accountable for the accident. Proposals for anti-terror law should be meticulously discussed and police and military should be supplied with most modern gadgets to combat terrorism. Terrorism in India is not a one-off problem and it cannot be addressed simply in crisis management mode. We need a solution preferably an iron-hand to contain both homegrown and imported terrorism acts.

Thackeray’s joke on Sania

There is nothing nonconforming for Sania Mirza, the Tennis player from India to marry Shoaib Malik, a cricketer from Pakistan. The news became a hot piece just because both are celebrities but belong to rival countries. World class players are world citizens and their decision to get married is not against or in favour of India’s secular views. It is their individual decision to get married and that decision will, in no way, improve or reduce India-Pak relation ship.

Bal Thackeray questioning Sania’s decision to marry Shoaib and still play for India, is an old man’s joke and can be ignored. To marry whom and when is the sole decision of the person getting married and can not be linked to the dictate of some religious fanatics who often see guilt in all matters in and around the country. Sania is a true Indian and she can remain so if she desires. The old man’s mind is seemingly twisted when he speaks about the 'tight clothes’ of Sania in the Tennis court. The only undesirable issue in the proposed alliance of Sania and Shoaib is the tale of previous wedding of the latter.

Condolence at the death of my friend Dr K K Sudevan

It was with a great feeling of loss when I heard of sudden demise of my friend K K Sudevan, the director, K R Gouri Amma College of Engineering, Valamangalam, Thuravoor. My heart is truly distraught.

Sudevan was more than just a humble and wonderful person; he was always so kind and considerate to me that I always welcomed seeing him at every occasion. He was my class mate in standard ten of High School, Kandmangalam. We were the only the two first classes from standard XB of the school in the SSLC examination of 1968 March. Our class teacher was Damodaran Sir. Sudevan’s paintings on the life cycle of frog was pasted on walls of the class room by Damodaran sir and asked us to learn from it. Radha Teacher, wife of Damodaran sir, was our Malayalam teacher. Rajappan sir and Valiya Thampan sir taught us Mathematics. The lessons we learned from the class were the same. However, he fathomed more miles than me with his intelligence and tireless effort. He was a professor at an Engineering college, Mumbai before joining at Valamangalam Engineering College as director.

His passing will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of all those who knew him. He was a true follower of Sree Narayana Guru. His association with Thaickal Muslim church, Thankey Christian Church, and Kandamangalam temple will be ever remembered. He was a man of vision and secular thoughts. Sudevan will always remain within my heart

My sincere prayers for my friend.

But the way in which his son was arrested and tortured by the police for the blunder his father had committed, is a very dire practice.
