Parliamentary debate relies heavily on mutual respect and decorum to maintain the dignity of the house. The interjection by CPM MP John Brittas while AIADMK MP M. Thambidurai was speaking in the Rajya Sabha was an unnecessary and disrespectful distraction.
Mocking or questioning the emotional and political reverence with which a senior leader refers to the late J. Jayalalithaa as 'Amma' shows a clear lack of political courtesy. M. Thambidurai is a distinguished public servant who has served as a Union Minister, a long-standing Member of Parliament, and the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Interrupting such an experienced statesman with a flippant remark fails to observe basic parliamentary norms.
Political differences and sharp debates are an integral part of democracy, but they should never translate into petty attempts to derail a speech. Disrupting a colleague’s address on a crucial topic like NEET with mock questions reflects poorly on the etiquette expected of an elected representative.
The CPM leadership should remind MP John Brittas about the importance of good manners, basic courtesy, and self-restraint in upper-house deliberations. A parliamentarian's focus ought to remain on constructive policy discussions rather than resorting to cheap interjections that diminish the gravity of the floor.
