We cannot help but applaud the extraordinary media prowess of Channel Twenty-Four, which was finally able to locate Sukumara Kurup, who has been desperately searching for years by the Crime Branch and Interpol, at a construction site in Bruno. Even the Home Department must have been shocked for a moment to hear the news that Kurup is working there happily. However, that deadly exclusive, which claimed to be a picture of Kurup and showed a photo of poor Damodara Menon, is a major milestone in the history of fake news.
The arrogance of anyone to fabricate anything and present it as a person, and the irresponsibility of committing personal murder without any basic information, are clearly evident here. Strong legal action must be taken against such media conspiracies that set out to catch Kurup and make ordinary passers-by criminals.
The situation where anything can be fabricated for the sake of ratings and to push breaking news is in any case reprehensible. It would not be surprising if tomorrow, in order to increase ratings, news was broadcast saying that Alexander Chakravarthy is running a plywood company in Perumbavoor or that Napoleon has taken a rice mill on lease in Kuttanad. Channels that broadcast such fabrications that throw dust in the eyes of the people without even investigating the facts and basic information are showing deception to the public.
Exemplary punitive measures must be taken by the authorities immediately to stop such trends that turn journalism into a comedy show.
