Pensioners are a jobless lot.

It is interesting to see that the Government of Kerala has placed a clear emphasis on welfare for the elderly citizens with an aim to give them a sense of physical and psychological security and social adaptation. There are many programmes and schemes launched for senior citizens in collaboration with the support of the government departments and the local police. Nevertheless, the experience of a few senior citizens including myself was not well , at least from one public utility service, the Treasury department.

Today(10th April) we, more than a hundred senior citizens (pensioners), have to wait about two hours, most of them in hot sun (two fainted) as the queue extended out from the teller counter of Cherthala Sub-treasury, to collect their pension. There was only one counter instead of the usual two. Possibly the Treasury officers are of the view that the pensioners are jobless persons and let them wait for some more time watching the TV installed before the counter. But alas, the TV was not working!
