Ordinary Indian citizens are now disillusioned with cricket because of the corrupt practices associated with it. It is a pity that the pace bowler, S. Sreesanth, along with Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila — all of whom played for the Rajasthan Royals in the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League — has been arrested on charges of spot-fixing (“Sree Shame: Police see three players fixing IPL spots, board sees little but bolt from blue”, May 17). The new format of the gentleman’s game that the IPL is played in — commonly called Twenty20 — has ruined cricket, and has made players greedy and unscrupulous. IPL viewers feel cheated.
The spot-fixing scandal is shameful. The involvement of film stars in the IPL is unwarranted. The latter is less about cricket and more about entertainment in the form of cheerleaders, high-profile after-match parties, spot-fixing and good-looking women anchors who, unfortunately, know nothing about the game. The spirit of cricket has been spoiled by the presence of film stars, greedy cricketers, channel promoters, liquor barons and big corporate houses. It is high time people boycotted the IPL.
