#Misplaced priorities in schools
The recent decisions by Kerala’s Education Minister reflect a gross misunderstanding of the foundational values and real priorities of school education. Banning morning prayer meetings, especially in schools run by religious communities that have long maintained inclusive practices, is an unnecessary interference. It shows both ignorance and arrogance on the part of minister
Thes schools have, for decades, conducted prayers without discriminating against students of any faith, fostering harmony and discipline. Instead of appreciating this model of unity in diversity, the minister chooses to stir controversy by misinterpreting such age-old traditions as problematic. This not only undermines the autonomy of these institutions but also disrupts the spiritual and moral fabric.
Adding to this absurdity is the minister’s adamant push for introducing Zumba as a regular feature in schools, sidelining the time-tested importance of physical drill and structured sports. This bizarre substitution is being justified in the name of anti-drug campaigns, but it reeks of superficial policymaking. Physical education should build strength, discipline, and team spirit. Its values are ingrained through sports and drill, not through imported fitness trends like Zumba.
Instead of addressing real issues such as crumbling infrastructure, lack of trained teachers, and syllabus confusion, the minister is busy peddling cosmetic changes. Instead he curbs good traditional practices. Such misplaced priorities only expose the minister's disconnection from grassroots realities. He often fails to grasp the true purpose of education.
