#Troubling message of Cinema
The movie Drishyam, though celebrated for its clever plot and suspenseful storytelling, has unfortunately demonstrated the dark side of cinema's influence on society. By glorifying the protagonist’s ability to evade justice after committing a murder, it sends a troubling message that criminal actions can be justified or covered up through manipulation and deceit.
The plot, which centers around a character using every possible trick to escape police scrutiny, may seem like harmless entertainment to some. However, the reality is that this kind of narrative has the potential to inspire dangerous behavior, as evidenced by several real-life incidents where individuals attempted to imitate the film's criminal methods.
Cinema has immense power to shape perceptions, and filmmakers should bear responsibility for the impact their content has on society, especially when it could influence impressionable viewers to commit crimes. The Ambalapuzha incident is the latest crime.
It is shocking that despite the clear potential for harmful influence, Drishyam and its sequels were not met with stronger scrutiny from India's censor board. The producers and creators, instead of facing accountability for portraying morally questionable behavior as clever and heroic, have been celebrated for the film's success. This highlights a failure in the system designed to regulate the ethical boundaries of cinema.
Filmmakers must be held to a higher standard, especially when dealing with content that could encourage criminal activity. The glorification of morally dubious actions for the sake of entertainment does not absolve them from the responsibility of the consequences, and the message of films like Drishyam must be challenged and criticized to prevent further damage to societal values.
