Election Commission of India has given
permission to Lok Sabha poll candidates to spend more by raising the
expenditure limits for parliamentary elections to a maximum of Rs 70 lakh for
bigger states and Rs 54 lakh for smaller states. If not implemented strictly
this gesture has no meaning. It is known to all that each candidate would spend
more than seven crores. The filing of asset details by candidates should also
be made meaningful as many submit zero or meagre balance while they enjoy five
star hospitality in all walks.
It is also a bad practice among political
parties in India to field candidates for the third or fourth time. As there are
many youngsters to serve the country these old gooses should be shown their way
out and new faces should be given opportunity.
And in this regard proposal by Rahul Gandhi is a welcome one.
Candidates declaring their assets and poll
expenses dishonestly should be brought book and for that EC of India should show ample courage.
