The Supreme Court-appointed Empowered Committee on the Mullaperiyar Dam concluding that the 119-year-old structure is safe, is a severe jolt for Kerala water Resources Minister P J Joseph. If chief minister Ommen Chandy has guts ask this irresponsible minister to quit from the cabinet. The panic created and still creating among people by this minister is far beyond any reckon.
The five-member committee headed by former Chief Justice of India Justice A S Anand also recommended that the water level in the dam can be raised to 142 ft from the existing 136 ft.
The Empowered Committee has also found that the Mullaperiyar Dam is safe on each of the hydrologic, structural and seismic considerations. And with this findings the mental torture and stress of a large number people living in the neighbourhood of the dam have come to an end.
The minister should be asked to keep his mouth shut at least in the matter of dam safety.
